Bus Crash in Bangladesh Kills Two Workers and Injures Twenty

A tragic road accident in Chattogram’s Anwara upazila has left two families devastated after a bus careened out of control, claiming the lives of two female factory workers and injuring at least 20 others. The incident occurred Thursday evening near the tunnel intersection at Chatari Choumuhani Bazar when the vehicle struck multiple CNG-run autorickshaws and a battery-operated rickshaw.
The victims, 36-year-old Poly Dutta and 35-year-old Ifa Sheel, were returning home from their shifts at the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ). Among the injured, who were rushed to Anwara Upazila Health Complex and Chittagong Medical College Hospital, is a seven-month-pregnant woman.
For Kajol Dutta, the tragedy unfolded in a harrowing phone call. Expecting his wife Poly’s arrival, he called her mobile phone at 8:30 p.m., only to be informed by a stranger that the owner of the phone had died. Poly, who had worked at KEPZ for 12 years to support her family and her two sons’ education, left behind a household now struggling to cope with the loss. Her eldest son, 18-year-old Saikat, expressed the profound void left by his mother, noting her tireless dedication to their future, while his younger brother, a tenth-grade student, struggled to process the sudden absence of her daily care.
The community is similarly mourning the loss of Ifa Sheel, whose final rites were held Friday in Jhiori village. Her husband, Shimul Sheel, a barber who relied on his wife’s long-term factory income to help manage family debt and the recent marriage of their eldest daughter, expressed total despair. The couple’s youngest child, seven-year-old Radhika, remains unaware that her mother will not be returning home.
Anwara police inspector (investigation) Mojnu Mia confirmed that the accident was caused by the passenger bus losing control, resulting in a multi-vehicle collision. Authorities are continuing to monitor the condition of the 20 injured victims, many of whom remain under medical care. As the village of Jhiori grapples with the aftermath, both families are left to reconcile the crushing financial and emotional loss of two women who served as the primary pillars of their respective households.
