Cypriot authorities have recovered the body of a 22-year-old Bangladeshi student, Shahriar Ahmed, who was reported missing for ten days after setting out for a new job in the city of Larnaca. Local police discovered the decomposed remains buried in the Kofinou area on Sunday evening following a lead provided by a suspect in custody.

Ahmed, a native of Raipura in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district, had arrived in Cyprus on a student visa just three months prior. He resided in the Oroklini area of Larnaca and had been seeking employment to offset his living expenses. On June 11, he contacted his family to share the news that he had secured a night shift position and was heading to his first shift. Shortly after arriving at the work site that evening, he sent his location to a roommate via WhatsApp. That was the last time he was heard from.

Shortly after his disappearance, Ahmed’s father, currently residing in Greece, began receiving extortion demands from his son’s WhatsApp account. The perpetrators demanded 35,000 euros for his release, threatening to harvest his organs if the ransom was not paid. The family initially suspected the account had been hacked, but the situation escalated as the kidnappers maintained constant communication, eventually negotiating the demand down to 500,000 taka.

Cypriot police arrested a 22-year-old Bangladeshi national, identified as Shahin Babu, in connection with the investigation. According to relatives of the deceased, police recovered Ahmed’s mobile phone from the suspect, who subsequently confessed to the murder during interrogation. Authorities stated that Ahmed was killed by stabbing on the night he went missing, after which his body was buried in a clandestine grave.

Ahmed’s family has expressed profound grief and is appealing to the government for assistance in repatriating his remains. Local officials in Raipura confirmed they are aware of the reports circulating regarding the student’s death but noted that they have not yet received official notification from the Bangladeshi embassy in Cyprus. Authorities indicated that they stand ready to assist the family through the appropriate ministries should a formal request for aid be filed.
