In Chandpur, the indefinite strike that started from 6 am on Thursday was called off after about 8 hours by the owners and labor leaders. Bus service has resumed on Chandpur-Comilla road from 2 pm.

In an emergency meeting organized by the district administration at the Chandpur District Commissioner’s office at noon today, a discussion was held with the landlords, workers and agitating students. If both sides agree to resume bus service there, bus services will start on Chandpur-Comilla road from 2 pm. However, in the discussion meeting, the owners-workers and teachers-students of the school-college of that area blamed each other for the demand of bus stop in Balakhale of Hajiganj upazila and the incident of attack and vandalism on the bus.

Monir Hossain, the managing director of Aidi Paribahan, operating on the Chandpur-Comilla road, complained in the meeting that the students attacked and vandalized the bus in the name of agitation and demanded a bus stop at Balakhal since May 18 with the help of some teachers including the current principal of Balakhal Maqbul Ahmed Degree College.

Akter Hossain Majhi, President of Chandpur Municipal BNP, said that Sagar, the current Chhatra Dal President of Balakhal Maqbul Ahmed Degree College, led this movement at the instigation of a teacher. However, Chhatra Dal president Sagar said, “We have protested for the bus stop following the long-standing demand of our teachers, students and local residents.” But we are not involved in vandalism or attack.

Hajiganj upazila executive officer Ibn Al Zayed Hossain said, “We saw this situation and talked to the students and house owners and decided to stop the bus there from May 18. But the next day, even though Bogdad stopped there until May 19, Idi Paribahan stopped it. Because of this, both sides clashed with the vandalism of the bus, worsening the law and order situation there.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Chandpur Lutfar Rahman said, “We will investigate and find the real culprits in the attack and vandalism that has been done in the name of the movement.”

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chandpur said, “Despite our decision, we will form an investigation team to find out why the agitation took place or who vandalized the bus, who is the fuel behind this incident. And I will take the case from both sides. After Eid, we will sit together and discuss about the bus stop at Balakhale and take the next decision.

The students and local residents of the area started a movement along with blocking the road from May 18 to demand a bus stop in Balakhale of Hajiganj upazila for Bogdad and Aidi Paribahan buses. Later, with the intervention of the district administration, the students lifted the blockade that day. However, after noon on Wednesday, the students and local residents once again blocked the road and started the movement with the same demand. Students and local residents clashed with transport workers yesterday evening. At least 13 people were injured. At that time five buses were vandalized.
