Khulna parents accused of murdering daughter over marriage dispute

Khulna police have arrested a mother for her alleged role in the murder of her 16-year-old daughter, an incident authorities say stemmed from a domestic dispute over the teenager’s relationships.

Arfana Hossain, a tenth-grade student, was found dead inside a plastic sack on a street in the Prantika residential area of Khulna on Wednesday night. According to police, the teenager had been involved in a relationship while in the eighth grade, which later became a source of intense conflict after she was married off to another person.

The situation escalated when Arfana expressed her desire to leave her husband to reunite with her previous partner, leading to a heated argument with her parents. During the altercation, Arfana’s mother, Arifa Yasmin, allegedly beat her daughter before the girl’s father, Alim Hossain, struck her on the head with a piece of wood, causing her death.

Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) officials revealed these details during a press conference Saturday morning. Authorities stated that after killing their only child, the parents placed her body in a sack typically used for bird feed. The father reportedly then transported the remains via motorcycle to the location where it was later discovered.

Police initially filed a murder case against unidentified suspects after failing to immediately identify the victim. The identity was confirmed only after the mother came forward to claim the body. Investigators later questioned Yasmin at the family home, where she reportedly provided inconsistent accounts before eventually confessing to her involvement. She has since provided a formal statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that they are currently conducting a search for Alim Hossain, who remains at large. The investigation is being overseen by senior KMP leadership, including Additional Police Commissioner M.M. Shakiluzzaman and other department heads.
