Measles outbreak claims 666 lives in Bangladesh as infections surge past 89,000

Five more children have died from symptoms associated with measles in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, pushing the national death toll to 666 since the outbreak began in mid-March. According to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday, the fatalities include 573 children who succumbed to suspected symptoms and 93 confirmed cases of the disease.
The latest victims were reported across four regions, with two deaths occurring in the Sylhet division. Single fatalities were recorded in the Dhaka, Chittagong, and Khulna divisions during the same 24-hour period. Health officials noted that 1,148 new cases of measles or related symptoms were identified between Wednesday and Thursday morning.

The surge in suspected infections has placed significant pressure on the country’s healthcare infrastructure. Within the last day alone, 907 patients were admitted to hospitals for suspected measles. The Dhaka division remains the epicenter of the crisis, accounting for 331 of the new hospitalizations, followed by 175 cases in Chittagong and 135 in Barisal.
Since the first case was identified on March 15, the DGHS reports that 89,904 people have exhibited symptoms of the virus over the last 95 days. Of that total, 74,184 patients required hospitalization, while 10,773 cases have been clinically confirmed as measles. Despite the high volume of patients, authorities reported that 815 individuals were discharged from medical facilities within the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 70,503.
