Court Grants Two-Day Remand for Associate of Azmeri Osman in Tanvir Muhammad Tawqi Murder Case

A Narayanganj court has granted a two-day remand for Mohammad Jamshed, a driver and associate of Azmeri Osman, in connection with the 2013 murder of student Tanvir Muhammad Taqi. Senior Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Yasin Arafat issued the order on Sunday, stipulating that the remand must be executed within the next three working days.

Jamshed has been in custody since his arrest by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11) in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on September 11, 2024. Although an initial remand was granted on June 4, the investigating officer, Additional Superintendent of Police Deepak Chandra Majumdar, was unable to conduct the interrogation at that time due to other official duties. Consequently, the court extended the execution period following a formal application.

According to Pradip Ghosh, a lawyer representing the plaintiff, the investigative team is seeking further information from Jamshed following instructions from higher authorities to conduct a more thorough probe before submitting a final charge sheet. The investigation into the case has previously pointed toward the involvement of the local influential Osman family.

Tanvir Muhammad Taqi, a meritorious student, disappeared on March 6, 2013, after leaving his home in the city’s Shaista Khan Road area. His body was recovered from the Kumudini canal of the Shitalakshya River two days later.

In subsequent years, two of Azmeri Osman’s associates, Sultan Shaukat and Kajol Howladar, provided confessional statements under Section 164, claiming that the abduction and murder were carried out under the leadership of Azmeri Osman, the son of the late former lawmaker Nasim Osman and nephew of former lawmaker Shamim Osman. In March 2014, RAB announced that an investigation had implicated 11 individuals in the killing, which allegedly took place at a torture cell operated by the Osman family. Despite these findings, a formal charge sheet has yet to be filed with the court.
