Manikganj Marks 10th Anniversary of Slain Police Officer Robiul Karim

Ten years after his heroic sacrifice at the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka, communities in Manikganj gathered on Wednesday to honor the memory of Assistant Commissioner of Police Robiul Karim. Karim was killed in 2016 while leading a rescue operation to save hostages held by militants during the terror siege.
The day’s commemorations began in his home village of Katigram, where a mourning procession set out from the Nazrul Bidya Siri, an educational institution Karim founded. Participants marched through the village before gathering at his grave to lay wreaths. Following the procession, a memorial service was held at the Beaconing Light Organization of Mankind and Society (BLOOMS), a specialized school Karim established to serve children with special needs.

Speakers at the memorial, including local police officials and community leaders, lauded Karim not only for his bravery in the line of duty but for his profound humanitarian spirit. Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Masum, a former colleague, remembered him as a man of exceptional intellect and deep patriotism.
The ceremony was also marked by concerns regarding the preservation of Karim’s legacy. Family members and colleagues expressed distress over the recent removal of a plaque dedicated to him at the Detective Branch (DB) headquarters in Dhaka and the vandalization of his sculpture in front of Gulshan Police Station. Responding to these events, Masum announced that former colleagues have united to petition the police commissioner for the restoration of the memorial plaque, asserting that such tributes are essential to honoring his contributions to the nation.

Beyond his role in law enforcement, Karim left behind a significant legacy through his work with BLOOMS. Established in 2011 on land donated by his mother, the school initially opened with twelve students. Today, it provides essential education, speech therapy, and physiotherapy to 47 special-needs children. During the memorial, members of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) pledged to ensure consistent healthcare services for the students and their families at the facility, continuing the work Karim left unfinished.
The commemorations concluded in the afternoon at the Manikganj Police Lines, where family members gathered at a mural of Karim to pay their final respects of the day. His younger brother and secretary of the BLOOMS committee, Shamsuzzaman Shams, reiterated that the true way to honor the late officer is to protect the institutions he built and to continue the mission of serving those in need.
