Feni Government College students remove event banner over exclusion of student leader portrait

Tensions flared at Feni Government College on Thursday as Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists forcibly removed a commemorative banner during a program marking the July Martyrs’ Day. The incident occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. at the college auditorium, where the administration had gathered to honor those killed during the recent anti-discrimination movement.
Witnesses reported that the initial banner featured portraits of prominent martyrs, including Abu Sayed, Mir Mugdho, and local students Sarwar Jahan Masud and Ishtiaque Ahmed Shrabon. JCD leaders, led by college unit General Secretary Zahid Hasan, entered the auditorium and immediately voiced their grievances, claiming that the omission of JCD leader Shahid Mohammad Wasim from the display was a deliberate slight.
The situation escalated quickly as JCD members climbed onto the stage and dismantled the banner in front of assembled faculty members, causing a brief disruption to the proceedings. The event was only able to resume after college authorities produced a revised banner incorporating Wasim’s portrait.
Zahid Hasan defended the activists’ actions, stating that the movement belongs to everyone and asserting that the exclusion of their leader was intentional. According to students and teachers present at the scene, the agitation was further fueled by internal dissatisfaction regarding the list of speakers slated for the event.
College Principal Mohammad Enamul Haque Khondokar confirmed the removal of the banner but clarified that the administration had not received any prior requests to include Wasim’s image. He noted that the original design followed the precedents set in previous commemorative materials. While the principal acknowledged that the sudden confrontation caused a delay, he maintained that the issue was ultimately resolved once the new banner was installed, allowing the scheduled speeches from representatives of both the JCD and Islami Chhatra Shibir to proceed.
