July Uprising Memorial Museum to Open Following Appointment of New Management Committee

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs has finalized the formation of a new management committee for the July Uprising Memorial Museum, clearing the way for the facility to open to the public. Minister of Cultural Affairs Nitai Roy Chowdhury confirmed the development on Friday, noting that preparations to launch the museum, which honors the martyrs and the democratic movement that led to the ouster of the former government, are now complete.
The museum, housed within the former Prime Minister’s official residence, Ganabhaban, was designed to preserve the artifacts and historical narrative of the July mass uprising. While the physical transformation of the space was concluded under the current interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the institution remained closed due to the absence of a functional governing board. Minister Chowdhury stated that the previous administrative framework was ineffective, necessitating a restructuring to ensure the facility is managed with the necessary oversight and care.

The government intends to host a formal press conference in the near future to announce the official opening date and outline plans for further enriching the museum’s collection. The Minister emphasized that the facility is intended to serve as a vital repository of the movement’s history and the broader context of the recent political transition.
During his visit to the Comilla region, the Minister also inspected several significant archaeological and cultural landmarks, including the Mainamati Museum and the Shalban Vihara. Highlighting the historical importance of these sites, he reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving Bangladesh’s ancient Buddhist heritage and cultural treasures.

Speaking at a public meeting, the Minister took the opportunity to criticize the previous administration’s tenure, alleging that the country’s institutions—ranging from the judiciary and law enforcement to the financial sector—suffered systemic decline over the past two decades. He accused the former government of widespread economic mismanagement and the looting of national wealth. In contrast, the current government, according to the Minister, is focused on restoring democratic norms and rebuilding the nation’s cultural and educational foundations.
The ministerial visit to Comilla included engagements with local dignitaries, including Member of Parliament Monirul Haque Chowdhury and senior officials from the Department of Archaeology. The tour concluded with a cultural program held at the District Shilpakala Academy, where the Minister participated as the chief guest.
