Jashore student leader arrested on rape charges

Police in Jashore’s Chaugachha upazila have arrested a student leader following allegations of rape filed by an 18-year-old college student. The suspect, 22-year-old Arafat Hossain, serves as the senior joint general secretary of the Chaugachha Government College unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
According to the case filed by the survivor, the incident occurred after she sought Arafat’s assistance with her national identification card registration. Despite the local election office being closed for the weekend, Arafat allegedly took the young woman to the town on his motorcycle Saturday morning. The complaint states that under various pretexts, he lured her to his rented residence, where he subsequently assaulted her.
The survivor reported the incident to her parents upon returning home, prompting the family to go to the Chaugachha Police Station to initiate legal proceedings. Officer-in-Charge Mamunur Rashid confirmed that the victim was sent to Jashore General Hospital for a mandatory medical examination on Saturday night. Arafat was taken into custody later that evening and is scheduled to be produced before a court on Sunday.
The leadership of the local Chhatra Dal has dismissed the allegations as fabricated. Emon Hasan, member secretary of the Chaugachha upazila unit, claimed that the case is a retaliatory measure stemming from a long-standing property and legal dispute between the two families that has persisted for 15 years. He asserted that the accusation was staged to influence the outcome of ongoing litigation.
