Chittagong Court Grants 10-Day Remand for Notorious Crime Boss David Emon

A Chittagong court has granted a ten-day remand for notorious gang leader Mobarak Hossain, widely known as “David Emon,” following his recent arrest while attempting to flee to India. Judicial Magistrate Mutasim Billah issued the order on Sunday, splitting the remand into two five-day periods covering a murder investigation in Fatikchhari and an illegal arms possession case. Four of Emon’s associates—including Mohammad Elias, alias Dhama Elias, and Shamim—were also remanded for five days in connection with the weapons recovery case.
Beyond the initial charges, Judicial Magistrate Lokman Hakim has formally ordered Emon to be shown arrested in a separate extortion case involving a 50 lakh taka demand and subsequent vandalism at a construction site in Hathazari. Security was heightened significantly around the court premises as Emon was transported from Chittagong Central Jail to face the proceedings.
Emon, who has at least 15 active criminal cases against him, was apprehended last Wednesday in Jashore alongside three accomplices. According to police, he serves as a primary lieutenant for Sajjad Ali, a top-tier fugitive criminal currently operating from abroad. Investigators state that Emon and his partner, Mohammad Raihan, lead a network of approximately 50 shooters and enforcers tasked with extorting businessmen and expatriates across the region.
Evidence presented by authorities highlights a pattern of extreme intimidation, with Emon frequently placing calls from foreign numbers to threaten victims. In one instance, he reportedly boasted of his ability to carry out contract killings regardless of police presence, while in others, he demanded multi-million taka payments from local businesses, including an internet service provider in the Bakalia area that was attacked in July.
Prior to his arrest, Emon openly acknowledged his criminal trajectory in a phone interview with the local press, stating he pursued a life of crime as a shortcut to becoming wealthy after early aspirations of a career in professional cricket failed to materialize. A native of Fatikchhari, Emon was once an athlete at the Chittagong Brothers Academy before descending into the criminal underworld.
Police allege that Emon became a pivotal figure within the Sajjad Ali syndicate following the arrest of other high-ranking lieutenants. He is suspected of involvement in several high-profile incidents, including a double murder in Bakalia and the killing of a rival operative at Patenga beach. Law enforcement officials describe him as a highly skilled marksman, noting that he is believed to have handled between 15 and 20 illicit firearms during his tenure as one of the city’s most prominent underworld figures.
