Jamalpur stopped the train due to lack of initiative to clear the waterlogging

Local residents have been suffering from flooding in Shekervita area of Jamalpur city for several weeks. People’s life is practically disrupted due to rising water in roads and houses. The angry locals protested by stopping the train after not taking any effective initiative despite informing the municipality and district administration several times. This incident took place in Shekervita area on Sunday afternoon.
Local residents blocked the private commuter train from Dewanganj to Dhaka at 2:40 PM in Shekervita area of the city. They started protesting by blocking the train. On receiving the information, law enforcement officers and local administration officials rushed to the spot. The train was released after about 40 minutes after assuring that the waterlogging problem would be solved in a speedy manner.

According to the local residents, more than three hundred families of Shekervita area have been living under water for several weeks. Roads, lanes and traffic routes in the area are submerged in water. Water has also entered the houses of many people. Waterlogging has also created serious health hazards. Already four children in the area have been bitten by snakes.
According to the aggrieved residents, the matter was brought to the notice of municipal and district administration officials several times, but no effective action was taken. In protest of long-term neglect and suffering, they were finally forced to block the train today.

Ataur Rahman, a resident of Shekervita area, said that the area is within the municipal city. However, more than three hundred families are trapped in water like a flood. There is no initiative of the local administration to solve the waterlogging. Because of this, they were angry and protested today by stopping the train. The local administration has assured to clear the flood soon. If they do not act accordingly, strict agitation will be called.
Jamalpur local government deputy director and municipal administrator Moushumi Khanam told Prothom Alo, ‘I am on vacation. I heard that the flooding in that area has really become serious. Four children have already been bitten by snakes. Instructions have been given to remove water from the area quickly. The work of diverting water by installing big pipes has started.
