Indian High Commissioner Discusses Strengthening Ties with Prime Minister Modi Following Dhaka Meetings

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss strategies for fostering a constructive and people-centric bilateral relationship. The hour-long meeting at the Indian Parliament followed a series of high-level engagements the High Commissioner held in Dhaka with Prime Minister Tareq Rahman, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

Diplomatic sources indicated that the discussions centered on establishing an “enabling environment” to advance ties between the two nations. During his meetings in Dhaka, High Commissioner Trivedi conveyed that the Indian leadership remains committed to strengthening the bilateral partnership. Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman emphasized the necessity of creating a conducive atmosphere to facilitate this cooperation, noting that such an environment is critical for regional stability and development.

In New Delhi, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Prime Minister Tareq Rahman has been formally invited to India for both a bilateral state visit and to participate in the outreach session of the upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled for September 12-13. As the current chairperson of BIMSTEC, Prime Minister Rahman is expected to attend the summit, and Indian officials stated that preparations for his bilateral visit remain a priority for the Ministry of External Affairs.

The recent diplomatic dialogues in Dhaka also addressed sensitive security and legal issues, including the repatriation of Sheikh Hasina and the handover of individuals accused in the murder of Shaheed Osman Hadi. Regarding these matters, Jaiswal stated that the Indian government is reviewing the requests in accordance with established legal procedures and existing bilateral frameworks.

High Commissioner Trivedi is expected to return to Dhaka with specific directives from Prime Minister Modi aimed at deepening the multifaceted, long-term relationship between the two countries. The Indian government has reiterated its interest in hosting Prime Minister Rahman and his family, viewing these high-level interactions as essential to resolving outstanding concerns and setting a positive trajectory for future cooperation.
