Feni Polytechnic Institute student detained and released after offensive social media posts about female students

Students at Feni Polytechnic Institute detained a fellow student on Monday night following allegations that he posted derogatory comments about female residents of the campus hostel on Facebook. The accused, 20-year-old Morshed Alam, also known as Adib, was initially handed over to police but was released shortly thereafter after the institute authorities declined to press formal charges.

Morshed, a third-semester student in the Electrical Department, is reportedly affiliated with the Islamic Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami party. Local leaders of the organization confirmed his ties but stated that he holds no formal leadership position, distancing the group from his actions.

The incident unfolded late Monday night when students discovered disparaging social media posts directed at female students. The controversy reportedly stemmed from Morshed questioning cleaning staff about items they had recovered near the women’s dormitory, subsequently using that information to target female students in an online post. Following the discovery, a large group of students confronted Morshed and turned him over to the campus administration, who then summoned the police.

GM Tajuddin, president of the Feni Polytechnic Institute Teachers’ Association, stated that while the student was handed over to police, authorities released him back to the college administration because no official complaint or legal case was filed. Morshed reportedly deleted the offensive post and issued a public apology on social media.

Teachers’ Association leaders cited concerns over the student’s academic future as a primary reason for withholding legal action. However, the institute convened an academic council meeting on Tuesday morning to establish an inquiry committee. The committee is expected to determine further disciplinary measures, with officials indicating that Morshed may be transferred to a different polytechnic institute to maintain campus order and security.

Local student leaders from the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal have publicly demanded the student’s immediate transfer. Meanwhile, the office of the Feni Model Police Station provided conflicting accounts regarding the incident; while the Teachers’ Association confirmed the handover, duty officers at the station claimed no student by that name had been taken into custody.

Repeated attempts to reach Feni Polytechnic Institute Principal Rezaul Karim for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to multiple phone calls.
