Measles outbreak claims six more lives as total death toll approaches one thousand

Six more people have died from measles or its associated symptoms across Bangladesh in the last 24 hours, raising the total death toll to 979 since March 15.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed these figures in its regular press briefing on Tuesday. According to the data, the latest fatalities included two deaths each in the Dhaka, Barishal, and Sylhet divisions. The reporting period covers the 24 hours from 8:00 a.m. Monday to 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.
Of the total 979 deaths recorded since mid-March, 880 cases involved individuals exhibiting symptoms of the virus, while 99 deaths were confirmed as measles-related following laboratory diagnosis.
Health officials reported 1,159 new suspected cases of measles nationwide over the past day, with 72 cases officially confirmed through testing. Since March 15, the country has recorded a total of 159,150 suspected cases and 19,384 confirmed cases of the virus.
Data indicates that 139,519 patients have been admitted to hospitals during this period, with 134,458 patients receiving clearance after recovery.
While the health directorate’s statistics do not provide a breakdown by age, epidemiologists noted that measles can affect individuals of any age group, though children remain the most vulnerable demographic. In the current outbreak, all reported deaths involving measles symptoms are being categorized as measles-related fatalities.
