Dhaka University Students Divided Over Proposed Changes to Female Dormitory Curfews

A divide has emerged among University of Dhaka students regarding residential hall policies, as two distinct groups presented conflicting proposals to the university administration on Monday. While one platform advocates for round-the-clock access to residential halls, a second collective, identifying as “Dhaka University Female Students,” is lobbying for a more moderate adjustment to existing entry hours.
The push for revised regulations follows a petition submitted earlier Monday by the “Anti-Discrimination Female Hall” platform, which officially demanded 24-hour access to halls. However, the “Dhaka University Female Students” group clarified that their objective is to extend the current 10:00 p.m. curfew to midnight, rather than eliminating entry restrictions entirely.

In their formal memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor, the latter group requested that university authorities permit access for both residential and non-residential female students upon the presentation of a valid student identification card. Their demands include a more flexible policy for the “late gate,” aimed at eliminating the administrative hurdles and harassment students often encounter when returning to their halls after hours. Additionally, they have called for the easing of security protocols to allow mothers and sisters of residents to visit inside the halls, provided they surrender proper identification.
Nusrat Jahan Jerin, a political science student representing the “Dhaka University Female Students,” stated that their organization had finalized their demands on Sunday and invited other student representatives to join them in a unified effort. She expressed uncertainty regarding why the other group chose to pursue a separate, competing agenda.

Regarding the disagreement over hall hours, Jerin emphasized that the priority is a functional extension of the curfew rather than a full 24-hour open-door policy. The group has issued an ultimatum to the university administration, declaring that if the current restrictive entry rules are not amended within seven days, they will initiate more rigorous protest measures. As of now, female students at the university are strictly required to enter their residential halls by 10:00 p.m.
