Demonstration of students with torches in protest of attempted rape of female students in Jahangirnagar

The women students of Jahangirnagar University staged a protest protesting the arrest of the accused in the case of the attempted rape of a student by dragging her from the road in the dark and the failure of the university administration to provide security. They took out a procession from Tarzan area of the university around 10:30 pm on Wednesday. Thousands of women students participated in the procession.
The procession passed in front of the 10 halls of residence and ended at the proctor’s office. Earlier, students took out a protest march from Battala area around 10 pm. The march went to Tarzan area and joined the protest march of women students and expressed solidarity with them.
In the procession, the students were seen chanting slogans like ‘Darshake two gale, Juta maro tale tale’, ‘Rape in the campus, what is the proctor doing?’, ‘Jalalo re jalalo, agun jalalo’, ‘Amar Sonar Banglaay, Darshakek thaini nai’ etc.
At the end of the procession, the students took a position in front of the proctor’s office of the university. At this time, the students made a five-point demand. Their demands are that the accused should be arrested within 24 hours, the proctor of the university Prof AKM Rashidul Alam should accept responsibility and resign, the proctorial body should also resign after accepting the responsibility of failure, quick response team should be formed to prevent harassment of women students, women security personnel should be appointed in the campus and added to the quick response team.
Nadia Rahman, a student of the management studies department of the university who participated in the march said, “We used to proudly say that this campus is safe for women. We never had this feeling that someone could look up at us. But now the situation is very fragile. Inside the campus, one of our classmates was dragged from the road to the bush and tried to rape. What can be more sad, shame? This administration has failed to provide security to our women students.
Last Tuesday at around 11 o’clock in the night, a female student was dragged into a bush while she was walking along a campus road and an attempted rape took place. Later, the injured student was rescued and taken to the university’s medical center.
In this incident on Wednesday afternoon, the deputy registrar of the security wing of the university. Jefrul Hasan Chowdhury filed a case against an unnamed person in Ashulia police station on the charge of attempted rape as the plaintiff. The face of a suspect has been confirmed in the CCTV footage, but his identity has not yet been confirmed by law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, some units of the law and order forces are working in the university and surrounding areas. They are hopeful that they will be able to arrest the accused very quickly.
