Court sets July 15 hearing to formally arrest former senior secretary Ziaul Alam in protest-related murder case

A Dhaka court has scheduled a hearing for July 15 to consider a petition to formally arrest former senior secretary N.M. Ziaul Alam in connection with the murder of Mahbub Hasan Mamun during the July mass uprising. Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman set the date on Monday after proceedings were delayed due to the absence of original case documents in the courtroom.
The petition was initially filed on July 9 by Sub-Inspector Md. Abdul Alim of Kafrul Police Station, the lead investigator in the case. Although the court had originally slated the matter for review on July 13, the postponement occurred after the defendant was produced from prison but the necessary case files failed to reach the bench.
According to state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman, investigators have gathered evidence during the preliminary inquiry linking the former official to the incident. Authorities have indicated that once the arrest is formally recorded, they intend to seek a remand to conduct further interrogations necessary for the investigation.
The charges stem from the death of 34-year-old Mahbub Hasan, who was participating in protests near the BRTA office in Mirpur on July 19, 2024. Hasan sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the unrest and was declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital.
The subsequent murder case, filed by the victim’s wife at Kafrul Police Station, names 161 individuals as defendants, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
