Dua Lipa’s Tk 183 crore lawsuit against Samsung

World-renowned British-Albanian pop star Dua Lipa has filed a massive lawsuit against electronics giant Samsung for USD 15 million (Tk 183.56 million in Bangladeshi currency). The 30-year-old singer alleged that Samsung had used her image in a campaign to sell TVs without her permission and without any compensation.

The lawsuit, filed on Friday (May 8), alleges that Samsung has featured Dua Lipa’s image in its global marketing program, without the artist’s consent. 

“Miss Lipper’s likeness has been used in a mass marketing campaign without her knowledge,” the lawsuit states. He did not allow it and never would have allowed such use.’ 

According to the complaint, starting in early 2025, Samsung started using Lipa’s image on their TV cartons and marketing materials. The controversial photo was taken backstage at the ‘Austin City Limits’ festival in 2024 and is copyrighted by Dua Lipper himself. 

When the musician found out about it, he requested Samsung to stop using the image. However, the suit claims, the company showed an ‘indifferent and callous’ attitude towards his request and rejected it. 

Some comments on social media ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) and Instagram were cited as evidence, where fans said they were inspired to buy Samsung TVs just by seeing Dua Lipa’s pictures. A fan wrote, ‘I didn’t even plan to buy the TV, but decided to buy it after seeing his picture on the box.’ 

He is seeking $15 million in damages, as well as a share of the excess profits Samsung made from using his image. The claim is brought under the California Right of Publicity Act and the federal Lanham Act. 

Note that this is not the first time for Dua Lipa. Last year he won a case against two music composers. The two claimed to have stolen the tune of Lipa’s popular song ‘Levitating’. But the judge rejected that claim.
