Court Orders Arrest of Former Lawmakers Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Solaiman Salim in BNP Worker Murder Case

A Dhaka court has ordered former Member of Parliament Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Solaiman Salim to be formally arrested in connection with the 2022 murder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activist Mokbul Hossain. The directives were issued during a hearing held Monday at the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam.

The legal proceedings concern a case filed with the Paltan Model Police Station. During the hearing, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Tofazzal Hossain of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, argued that the formal arrest of both individuals was essential for a fair and impartial investigation into the killing. Following the arguments presented by the prosecution, the court granted the petition and ordered the accused to be sent to jail.

The case originated from a violent clash on December 7, 2022, when police raided the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan ahead of a planned opposition rally. During the confrontation, BNP activist Mokbul Hossain sustained fatal gunshot wounds. On September 30 of last year, a complainant named Mahfuzur Rahman initiated the murder case, naming 256 individuals, including then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Solaiman Salim was previously apprehended by police in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on November 13, 2024, following the collapse of the Awami League government. Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin was later taken into custody in the Mohammadpur area of the capital on January 20, 2025. Prosecution lawyer Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the court’s latest decision regarding the duo.
