College student murdered in Mymensingh hours before 23rd birthday

A 23-year-old college student was killed in a brutal ambush in Mymensingh’s Gafargaon municipality early Tuesday morning, hours after celebrating his birthday. Nahiyan Robin, a second-year undergraduate student and son of a local laborer, succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
The attack occurred around 1:00 a.m. on the Shilaşi Mazar Road as Robin and a friend, Shakibul Hasan, were returning home on a motorcycle. The pair had just attended a birthday celebration at the Gafargaon Dak Bungalow premises to mark Robin’s 23rd birthday. According to witnesses and local police, a group of three to four assailants, whose faces were covered with scarves, had been lying in wait along the route.
The attackers incapacitated the pair by throwing chili powder into their faces, causing the motorcycle to crash. While Shakibul managed to flee the scene on foot, Robin was caught by the assailants. Witnesses reported that the group beat him with iron rods before inflicting fatal wounds with sharp weapons. Local residents later discovered the severely injured student and transported him to the Gafargaon Upazila Health Complex, but he was declared dead upon his arrival at the medical college.
Family members believe the killing may be linked to Robin’s political leanings. While he did not hold an official position, his uncle, Nazrul Islam, stated that Robin was a known supporter of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. Relatives suspect that the targeted nature of the assault, carried out by individuals who remained masked throughout the encounter, points to an underlying political motive.
Gafargaon Police Station officer-in-charge Atiqur Rahman confirmed that an investigation is underway. Authorities have not yet made any arrests, and police officials noted that they are still working to determine whether the motive was strictly political. Manotosh Biswas, the Additional Superintendent of Police for the Gafargaon Circle, stated that investigators are currently gathering evidence to identify the perpetrators and establish a motive for the homicide.
