Football Rivalry Turns Deadly in Bangladesh as Fan Dies After Altercation

A dispute over a football match between Argentina and Egypt turned fatal in Comilla’s Durgapur union late Tuesday night, leaving an auto-rickshaw driver dead following a violent confrontation.
The incident occurred around midnight at a local shop in the Dhanpur area of Comilla Adarsha Sadar upazila. According to local witnesses, the victim, 38-year-old Shariful Islam, was watching the match among a group of spectators when a heated debate erupted between rival supporters. The argument escalated into a physical altercation, during which Shariful was repeatedly struck before collapsing to the ground.

Emergency responders transported Shariful to Comilla Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body remains at the hospital morgue pending a post-mortem examination. Shariful, a native of Nilphamari’s Jaldhaka upazila, had been living as a tenant in the city’s Ward 23 area.
As of Wednesday morning, no formal case had been filed and police have yet to make any arrests. Tawhidul Anwar, officer-in-charge of Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station, stated that authorities are awaiting the arrival of the victim’s family to initiate legal proceedings. He confirmed that investigators are currently working to identify and track down those responsible for the assault.

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the victim’s football allegiances. While initial police findings suggested Shariful was an Argentina supporter, some local residents claimed he was a fan of Brazil and had been cheering for Egypt during Tuesday’s match. Police officials indicated that the investigation into the motive and the specific circumstances of the clash is ongoing. Local shop owner Mohsin Mia, at whose establishment the match was being broadcast, could not be reached for comment.
