A mother elephant died after being shot in the eye in Purnagram area of ​​Khutakhali Union of Ramu Upazila of Cox’s Bazar. According to the forest department staff, the elephant was shot about a month ago. The elephant died last Saturday around 11 pm.

Purnagram area of ​​Ramu upazila is bordered by Naikxyongchari upazila of Bandarban. On Saturday afternoon, local people found the mother elephant lying in a coma. The elephant, sick and weak, could not even stand. Local residents saw a three-year-old calf roaming next to it. The cub was screaming again and again. The workers of Eidgaon range of Cox’s Bazar North Forest Division went there after receiving information from the residents.

Ujjal Hossain, officer of the Eidgaon Range of the Forest Department, said that after receiving the news, he went to Purnagram and found that the physical condition of the elephant was very critical. It could not even move. A veterinary surgeon at Dullahazara Safari Park was immediately informed for treatment. But by that time it was night so he could not come. So the elephant is given medicine according to the prescription given by him. However, the elephant died at around 11 pm.

Ujjal Hossain said, after the death of the mother elephant, a herd of 10-12 elephants came down from the hill. The elephants bellowed and roared for quite some time beside the dead elephant. Then Shokatu’s herd of elephants went back to the hills. Forest officer Ujjal Hossain also said that the dead body of the elephant was buried on Sunday and a general diary (GD) has been filed at Ramu police station.

Veterinary surgeon Mostafizur Rahman conducted the autopsy of the dead elephant. He said that a 10-inch deep wound was found on the left eye of the dead elephant. A few bullets were recovered from the wound. The elephant died of a lead infection inside the eye. Mostafizur Rahman also said, “The elephant was shot dead with a locally made gun while wandering in the mountains.”

Forest department officials said that two-three weeks ago they received information through local residents that a wild elephant was sick and roaming in Baishari Union of Naikxyongchari Upazila and Ramu and Eidgaon forests in Cox’s Bazar. It also has a cub. However, the elephant could not be found even after searching in different places at that time.
