Clash erupts between student groups at Lakshmipur anniversary event

A commemorative event marking the July uprising in Lakshmipur descended into chaos on Wednesday as political tensions flared between members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir. The incident occurred at the Sadar Upazila Parishad auditorium during a district administration-organized discussion and reception ceremony.
The disturbance began when Sarwar Hossain, a participant in the July movement, delivered a speech criticizing Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, a prominent local political figure and former lawmaker. The remarks triggered an immediate backlash from Chhatra Dal activists present in the hall, leading to a heated verbal confrontation that quickly escalated into a wider commotion between the two student organizations.
Law enforcement officers stationed at the venue intervened immediately to suppress the unrest. While the shouting match caused a temporary suspension of the event, organizers were able to restore order, allowing the proceedings to continue shortly thereafter.
Presided over by Deputy Commissioner S.M. Mehedi Hasan, the ceremony was attended by Superintendent of Police Md. Abu Tarek, alongside political leaders, families of those killed during the uprising, and various community representatives.
