Measles Outbreak Death Toll Climbs to 854 as Health Officials Report New Surge

Five more children have died due to measles and its associated symptoms in the 24-hour period ending Wednesday morning, pushing the national death toll to 854 since mid-March. According to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the fatalities occurred in Dhaka, which recorded three deaths, and Sylhet, where two children succumbed to the illness.
The data indicates a persistent surge in infections, with 1,083 new cases reported over the same 24-hour window. Of these, 124 individuals were clinically diagnosed with measles, while 959 others exhibited symptoms consistent with the viral infection.
Since the outbreak began on March 15, the country has documented a total of 149,560 cases among children. Of this figure, 16,655 cases have been laboratory-confirmed as measles, while 132,905 individuals have presented with related symptoms. The cumulative death toll reflects 96 confirmed measles fatalities alongside 758 deaths attributed to suspected cases.
Hospitalization data highlights the significant pressure the outbreak has placed on the healthcare system. Since March 15, 115,234 children have been admitted to hospitals for treatment. Health officials confirmed that 111,005 patients have since been discharged following recovery or stabilization.
