Chattogram Police Official Withdrawn After Assault on National Cricketer Naim Hasan

Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) authorities have removed Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman from his post following the public outcry over the physical assault of national cricket team player Nayeem Hasan. CMP Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali issued the withdrawal order on Saturday night, reassigning Rahman to the police lines.
The administrative reshuffle, confirmed by CMP spokesperson Aminur Rashid, also saw Mohammad Solaiman transferred from the Bakalia Police Station to take charge at Khulshi. Meanwhile, Zahidul Kabir, an inspector from the CMP’s special branch, has been appointed as the new officer-in-charge of Bakalia.

The incident occurred late Friday when Nayeem was returning home from the airport. As reported by Prothom Alo, the cricketer was traveling by autorickshaw in the Lalkhan Bazar area when he was intercepted by a Khulshi police team that initially identified themselves as detective branch officers. According to Nayeem, the officers seized the driver’s documents before subjecting him to a beating with batons and pipes, allegedly led by Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam and a police informant known as Sohel.
Nayeem was subsequently transported to the Khulshi Police Station, where he alleged he was further harassed. He was eventually released following the intervention of officials from the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

In response to the mounting criticism surrounding the event, the CMP has suspended Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam and Constable Md. Rashel Chowdhury, both of whom have been attached to the Dampara police lines. Commissioner Shawkat Ali further confirmed that the informant, Sohel, has been taken into custody. A three-member committee has been established to conduct a formal investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
