Businessman dies after falling from moving rickshaw in Noakhali; police detain suspect

A 45-year-old businessman died late Monday after falling from a moving auto-rickshaw in the Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali, a death his family alleges was a targeted homicide. The victim, Ismail Hossain, a textile merchant from the local Dighirjan market, was discovered unconscious on the road in the West Nateshwar area of Nateshwar union at approximately 9:00 p.m.

According to police and local accounts, the incident began earlier that evening when 64-year-old Nur Nabi visited a shop to discuss a family matter with the victim. Following the discussion, Nabi, Hossain, and a relative named Abu Zaher boarded an electric auto-rickshaw heading toward West Nateshwar, with Hossain and Nabi seated in the rear.

As the vehicle reached the western end of Dighirjan market, Nabi reportedly alerted the driver that Hossain had fallen from the vehicle. When Zaher exited the auto-rickshaw to investigate, he found Hossain lying unresponsive on the roadway. Witnesses reported that Nabi fled the scene with the vehicle shortly thereafter.

Hossain was transported to a private hospital in Choumuhani before being moved to the Begumganj Upazila Health Complex, where he was pronounced dead by attending physicians.

Sonaimuri Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Kabir Hossain confirmed that a preliminary inquest revealed trauma to the back of the victim’s head and swelling on his left jaw. Authorities have taken Nur Nabi into custody for questioning to determine the circumstances surrounding the fall. Police officials stated that the official cause of death remains pending the results of a formal autopsy.
