Bribe deal in Netrakona: OC transferred after withdrawal of SI

After withdrawing a Sub-Inspector (SI) of police on the charge of negotiating a bribe to release smuggled Indian cosmetics in Kalmakanda, Netrakona, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Siddique Hossain has been transferred. He was transferred to Pemai Police Investigation Center in Kendua Upazila.

According to local residents and police sources, the police seized 18 sacks of Indian cosmetics from a pickup in a raid in the Rangamatia area of Nazirpur union of the upazila last Tuesday night. At that time, the driver of the pickup Nashim (23) of Shingpur village of Nazirpur and his assistant Monir Hossain (21) of Seichahani village were arrested.

In this incident, a case was filed against Jasim Uddin of Rajnagar village in the upazila. Jasim is said to be the master of the stolen goods; But two audios of the conversation between SI Abu Hanifa and Jasim Uddin were spread on social media last Wednesday night. The length of the first audio is 5 minutes 23 seconds. Jasim can be heard saying, ‘Sir, I will give you 80 thousand rupees. You don’t sue me. Just show two sacks of goods seized.’ A man (claimed to be SI Abu Hanifa) is heard saying, ‘No brother, it will not be less than what I am saying. You pay three lakh rupees.
At one point in the conversation, the person said, “I will give one lakh taka.” OC Sir will not go against it. The OC sir says, since you informed me, talk to the constable.” The second audio, claimed to be recorded at 1.41 pm, is 3 minutes 12 seconds long. In it, the person claiming to be the police officer can be heard saying, ‘Whatever you do, do it quickly. I am now crossing the Bhawanipur Bridge… I have given a discount for you, bring two and a half lakh taka.’ In response, Jasim is heard saying, ‘I am giving you two lakh taka even though it is difficult. Give me some time.
At one point, the police officer said, “Look, WhatsApp conversations can be recorded on other phones, don’t do it.”
SI Abu Hanifa was withdrawn from the police station when there was widespread discussion and criticism in the area about the incident. At the same time, a three-member investigation committee headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Sajal Kumar Sarkar was formed. The report has been asked to be submitted within the next three working days.
Several attempts were made to contact the accused SI Abu Hanifa and Jasim Uddin on their cell phones to get their statement on the matter, but they were found to be disconnected.
This evening, when the officer in charge (OC) of Kalmakanda police station was contacted, he received the call. Siddique Hossain said, “My transfer order has been received. And I am not involved in any way with the incidents of stolen goods. Senior sirs are investigating the matter.
