Bogra Political Leader Faces Kidnapping and Extortion Charges Following Bank Official’s Abduction

A senior official of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in Bogura is facing criminal charges after allegedly kidnapping and extorting money from an Islami Bank officer. The case, filed at the Bogura Sadar Police Station, accuses Shaukat Imran, the organizing secretary of the party’s Bogura district branch, and three unnamed accomplices of abduction and demanding ransom.
The complainant, Ashraful Islam, a junior trainee officer at the Naogaon branch of Islami Bank, alleged in the police report that the incident occurred Saturday afternoon. According to the filing, Islam was traveling home by auto-rickshaw when the suspects intercepted his vehicle near a railway flyover. He was forcibly abducted at gunpoint, taken to a student dormitory in Old Bogura, and subjected to physical assault. The assailants allegedly seized 82,000 taka in cash, two mobile phones, and an ATM card, while coercing him to record a statement under duress. Furthermore, the suspects reportedly demanded an additional 20,000 taka from his family, threatening to kill him if the payment was not delivered.
Shaukat Imran has denied the allegations, characterizing the complainant as a former activist of an Islamist student organization engaged in online fraud. Imran claimed that he intervened after discovering that Islam had allegedly defrauded an acquaintance of 25,000 taka through social media impersonation. He asserted that he confiscated the mobile phones to secure evidence of the fraud and claimed that the victim voluntarily left the devices behind. Imran maintained that he possesses proof to refute the kidnapping charges.
This case adds to a series of serious allegations leveled against the NCP official. On March 23, a local businessman, Nahiyan Islam, accused Shaukat Imran of holding him at gunpoint and hijacking his personal vehicle. Additionally, in April 2025, a Bogura resident filed a complaint with law enforcement alleging that Imran had attempted to seize his property.
In response to the growing controversy, the NCP district convener, M.S.A. Mahmud, stated that the party has established an internal committee to investigate the kidnapping case. He indicated that the committee is mandated to submit its findings within three days and that disciplinary action will be taken if the accusations are validated.
Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali confirmed that a formal case has been registered, and investigations are currently underway, with Sub-Inspector Shamim Hossain assigned to lead the probe.
