Dhaka Metropolitan Police courts resolve nearly 6,000 criminal cases in July

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) special magistrate courts disposed of 5,890 criminal cases throughout July, according to an official statement released on Monday. The move is part of an ongoing effort to expedite justice within the capital, with the DMP asserting that the immediate resolution of offenses is bolstering public confidence in the judicial process and law enforcement.
Legal officer Mohammad Ataul Haque confirmed that the proceedings spanned the force’s eight operational divisions, including Motijheel, Tejgaon, Wari, Gulshan, Mirpur, Ramna, Lalbagh, and Uttara. During the month, police arrested 10,437 individuals in connection with these cases, of whom 6,861 received various prison sentences.
Financial penalties also saw significant collection, with the courts recovering 2.34 million taka in fines from the settled criminal cases. An additional 258,230 taka was generated through the auction and confiscation of assets.
Beyond criminal litigation, the DMP focused on enforcing traffic regulations under the Road Transport Act of 2018. Authorities initiated 1,340 new cases for traffic violations in July and concluded a total of 3,417 cases, including those carried over from previous months. These traffic enforcement efforts resulted in 802,700 taka in collected fines, complemented by 33 specialized operations conducted across the city to maintain public order.
The DMP maintains that these swift judicial interventions serve as a deterrent to potential offenders, contributing to a measurable improvement in the overall security and law-and-order situation within Dhaka.
