BGB seizes weapons and narcotics following cross-border skirmish with Myanmar insurgents near Coxs Bazar

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) forces engaged in an armed confrontation with a group of suspected militants along the Ukhia border in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday, resulting in the seizure of a significant cache of weaponry and contraband.
The incident occurred near the zero line of the Naf River in the Palongkhali area. According to a statement released by the BGB’s 64th Battalion, patrol officers encountered several individuals disguised as fishermen aboard a boat within Bangladeshi territorial waters. The suspects reportedly opened fire on the BGB patrol team, forcing the guards to return fire in self-defense.

The suspects ultimately abandoned their vessel and fled by swimming across the river toward the Myanmar side. Lieutenant Colonel Md. Zahirul Islam, commander of the BGB’s Ukhia battalion, confirmed that there were no casualties reported during the exchange.
Following the skirmish, BGB personnel searched the abandoned boat and recovered a G-3 rifle, along with three empty rifle magazines and three fiber magazines. In addition to 515 rounds of ammunition, the search yielded 4,000 methamphetamine pills, known locally as yaba, and various communications equipment, including mobile phones. Local authorities have intensified surveillance along the border region in the wake of the encounter.
