Sreemangal sees modest tourist turnout during Eid holidays amid nature focus

The scenic tea gardens and lush landscapes of Sreemangal, widely regarded as the tea capital of Bangladesh, have attracted a steady flow of visitors during the Eid-ul-Adha holiday. While families are enjoying the serene environment, tourism operators report that the overall turnout is noticeably lower compared to previous years.
Industry experts identify several contributing factors for the decline in footfall, including public health concerns regarding an outbreak of measles, persistent difficulties in securing train tickets, and the inconvenience of road congestion. Additionally, unseasonably high temperatures have deterred many travelers from venturing out, leading them to remain within the confines of their resorts and cottages.

Despite the reduced numbers, visitors are continuing to explore the region’s diverse attractions, such as the Boddhobhumi-71 monument, the Wildlife Foundation, Lawachara National Park, and the iconic seven-layer tea stalls. For many, the transition from urban congestion to the tranquil, greenery-filled atmosphere of Sreemangal provides a vital escape for relaxation and family bonding.
Tapas Das, vice president of the Radhanagar Tourism Entrepreneur Association, noted that while hotels and resorts initially saw approximately 70 percent of their rooms booked in advance, the actual arrival rate proved more modest. Although numbers gradually increased by the second and third days of the holiday, the intense heat has fundamentally altered tourist behavior, with many opting for indoor leisure rather than sightseeing.

There are currently over a hundred hotels, resorts, and lodging facilities operating in the area. S.K. Dash Suman, general secretary of the Sreemangal Tourism Service Association, emphasized that local businesses rely heavily on these holiday periods for their annual revenue. The current shortfall in visitors has left stakeholders hopeful that the remaining days of the holiday will bring a surge in travel activity.
To ensure public safety, the Tourist Police have intensified their presence across all major landmarks. Inspector Projit Kumar Dash, in charge of the Sreemangal zone, stated that officers are conducting regular patrols and coordinating with local law enforcement to maintain a secure environment. According to police reports, the holiday period has remained incident-free, with comprehensive measures in place to facilitate a smooth experience for all travelers.
