Bangladeshi Teacher Turns to Commercial Papaya Farming to Yield High Returns

A primary school teacher in Bangladesh’s Kushtia district has transformed a three-bigha plot of land into a highly profitable papaya orchard, marking a significant success story for local agricultural entrepreneurship. Abdul Hannan, who teaches library and information science at a local secondary school, has turned to the “Manikganj Shahi” indigenous papaya variety to achieve substantial financial returns, inspiring neighboring farmers in Darbeshpur village to follow suit.

Hannan’s venture began eight months ago with the planting of 1,200 saplings. Despite an initial investment of 150,000 taka for planting and maintenance, he began yielding harvests by late May. Within two months, he generated 170,000 taka through wholesale sales, with prices ranging from 20 to 65 taka per kilogram. Projecting favorable weather conditions, Hannan expects to harvest an additional 400 maunds of papaya over the next five months, alongside a goal of producing 80 kilograms of high-quality seeds. Total annual revenue is projected to reach 1 million taka, yielding a net profit of approximately 850,000 taka.

The success of the orchard follows years of trial and error. After witnessing poor results with previous hybrid trials in 2023 and 2024, Hannan pivoted to the local Manikganj Shahi variety in early 2025. The resilience and productivity of this specific strain—which produces fruits weighing between 1.5 and 6 kilograms from base to crown—have attracted widespread attention. Local agricultural experts note that this variety is characterized by its resistance to disease and high yield potential, making it an ideal candidate for commercial expansion.

Hannan’s agricultural model has had a noticeable ripple effect within his community. His nephew has already established a smaller orchard, and other local farmers, such as Amal Kumar Biswas, have begun transitioning to papaya cultivation after observing Hannan’s profitable results. Commercial traders have also lauded the superior quality of the fruit produced in the orchard, further solidifying the local reputation of the crop.

According to the local agricultural office, approximately 200 bighas of land are currently under papaya cultivation in the Kumarkhali sub-district. Agriculture officials have commended Hannan’s initiative, noting that his success as an educator-farmer is serving as a catalyst for local economic development. The government now intends to provide additional incentives and technical support to encourage more farmers to adopt these proven cultivation methods, ensuring that the trend of high-yield, low-cost farming continues to gain momentum in the region.
