Bangladeshi man suffers severe injury in landmine blast near Myanmar border

A 25-year-old Bangladeshi man sustained critical injuries after stepping on a landmine inside Myanmar territory near the Jaruliachhari border in Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari upazila on Tuesday. The victim, identified as Abdul Karim, suffered a traumatic amputation of his left leg below the knee in the explosion.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. in the Garbita area of Myanmar’s Rakhine state, situated roughly 100 meters across the border between border pillars 46 and 47. This region is currently under the control of the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed organization active in the conflict-ridden state.

According to local accounts, Karim had crossed the international boundary along with three companions around 12:30 p.m. Following the blast, the three individuals fled back into Bangladesh and alerted locals, who subsequently located the injured man and carried him across the border to safety. He was later transported to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for emergency medical care.

Naikhongchhari Police Station officer-in-charge Mozammel Haque confirmed the incident, stating that authorities are currently investigating the circumstances behind why Karim entered Myanmar territory. Officials from the local Ansar and Village Defense Party noted that the Arakan Army has heavily mined the area along the border fence to prevent infiltration.

While residents often cross the zero line for agricultural activities or illicit cross-border trade involving livestock and narcotics, the security situation remains volatile. Representatives from the 11th Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) battalion were unavailable for comment regarding the border breach.
