In Sunamganj fear of flash floods, advice to harvest Haor paddy quickly

It is raining in Cherrapunji, India upstream of Sunamganj. The water of the mountain stream is coming down. The Water Development Board (PUBO) has advised to cut paddy land in Hawre in fear of untimely floods.
This Tuesday afternoon Sunamganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer. This was suggested in a circular signed by Mamun Hawladar. Mamun Howladar said, when 80 percent of the paddy is ripe, it is now risky to keep it in the land. Earlier it rained in Sunamganj. There is already rain water in Hawar. Now if the upstream falls, the water will increase. So the farmers have been advised to harvest the ripening paddy quickly.

Paubo said that it has been raining in Sunamganj since the beginning of Chaitra month. Heavy rains have caused waterlogging in various places. When it rains upstream, hill slopes fall in Sunamganj. It increases the water in Surma, Kushiara and other rivers. At any time flash floods may occur in Haor area, crop damage may occur.
Due to water in many areas of Sunamganj, there is a problem in harvesting paddy with combine harvester. There is also a labor shortage. All balumhals and toll stations have been closed from April 20 to 30 to deal with the labor crisis in Howre Boro paddy harvesting.

Farmers say that laborers used to come to Haor from different parts of the country to harvest paddy. Again there were many local workers. The arrival of foreign workers has decreased day by day. Again, as the rice harvester was introduced, the local workers no longer cut rice as before.
According to the sources of the District Agriculture Extension Directorate, 2 lakh 23 thousand 511 hectares of land have been cultivated in 137 haors of Sunamganj. Out of this, 1 lakh 65 thousand 275 hectares are in the deep part of Haor and 58 thousand 236 hectares in relatively higher parts without Haor. The production target of paddy is about 14 lakh metric tons.
