Bangladesh Court Sentences Three to Death for 2012 Child Abduction and Murder

A Dhaka tribunal sentenced three men to death on Tuesday for the kidnapping and murder of an eight-year-old child in Gopalganj district 14 years ago. Judge Farzana Yasmin of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict, which also handed down life imprisonment to two other individuals involved in the case.
The individuals sentenced to death are Jamal Sheikh, Shamim Sheikh, and Ranju Sheikh. The court sentenced the two remaining defendants, Mahmuda Khanam and Billal Sheikh, to life in prison. In addition to the custodial sentences, each of the five convicts was ordered to pay a fine of 50,000 taka.

The case dates back to July 5, 2012, when the victim, Mahfuz, was abducted from Barashur village in the Kashiani upazila. Following the kidnapping, the perpetrators demanded a ransom from the child’s family. When the demands went unmet, the child was strangled to death on August 20, 2012, at the residence of the defendant Mahmuda Khanam. The perpetrators subsequently discarded the child’s body in a mahogany orchard near the property.
Following the discovery of the crime, the victim’s mother, Swapna Begum, filed a formal complaint with the Kashiani Police Station. Law enforcement submitted a formal charge sheet against the suspects on November 20, 2012.

The case was transferred to the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 in 2013, with the formal indictment process beginning in 2014. Throughout the protracted legal proceedings, the court heard testimony from 23 prosecution witnesses and eight witnesses for the defense.
