Bangladesh Coast Guard rescues 50 trafficking victims in Teknaf raid

Bangladesh Coast Guard personnel rescued 50 people from a fishing trawler off the coast of Teknaf on Saturday, thwarting a human trafficking attempt to Malaysia. The operation resulted in the arrest of nine suspected traffickers, according to Lieutenant Commander Md. Muttakin Siddiqui, station in-charge of the Coast Guard’s Teknaf base.

The rescued individuals consist of 39 Bangladeshi nationals and 11 Rohingya refugees, including women and children. Authorities launched the rescue mission after receiving intelligence on Friday evening that a trafficking syndicate was preparing to transport a group of people overseas via the Bay of Bengal. Coast Guard officials intensified surveillance across all coastal points in Teknaf, eventually spotting a suspicious trawler near the Baharchhara coast.

When the Coast Guard signaled the vessel to stop, the traffickers attempted to evade capture by accelerating away from the scene. Following a pursuit, officers intercepted the trawler and conducted a search, discovering the victims hidden on board.

The nine suspects apprehended during the operation have been identified as Md. Russell, Md. Amir Uddin, Md. Sahabuddin, Md. Yunus, Md. Jasim, Md. Rafiq, Md. Abdur Razzaq, Md. Ismail, and Md. Suruj Zaman. Lieutenant Commander Siddiqui confirmed that all nine detainees were handed over to the Teknaf Model Police Station, where they have been processed under relevant trafficking legislation.

Investigations indicate that the organized crime syndicate targeted vulnerable individuals with promises of high-paying jobs and a better quality of life abroad. Once lured to the Teknaf coastline, victims were frequently held in secret locations and subjected to physical abuse as traffickers demanded ransom payments from their families.
