Witness Testimony Links Pro-Awami League Armed Processions to Deadly Violence During July Uprising at International Crimes Tribunal

A witness testified before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Tuesday, alleging that cadres from the Awami League’s affiliated organizations opened fire on protesters during the July mass uprising in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.
Md. Al-Amin Hossain, currently the general secretary of the Sramik Dal’s Pallabi unit, provided his formal testimony in the case filed against former Law Minister Anisul Huq and former prime ministerial advisor Salman F. Rahman. The two accused were present in the courtroom during the proceedings.
In his deposition, Al-Amin stated that on July 18, 2024, at Mirpur-10, police fired rubber bullets and pellets at protesters. He alleged that three to four individuals in plainclothes embedded themselves among the police officers. During this engagement, a shot struck a man named Siam Sardar in the left eye, with the projectile exiting through the back of his head before grazing Al-Amin. Al-Amin testified that he collapsed at the scene and, upon regaining consciousness, found himself covered in the blood and brain matter of Siam Sardar, who was later declared dead at a hospital.
Al-Amin further claimed that during the protests, motorcycle processions led by members of the Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechasebak League, and Sramik League were responsible for targeted gunfire that left numerous demonstrators injured. He recounted that he participated in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement from July 1 to August 5, 2024. He noted that by the following morning, July 19, he received reports of multiple deaths in the Jute Potti area, including individuals identified as Asif, Parvez, and Rubel.
Referencing leaked audio recordings, the witness alleged that Anisul Huq and Salman F. Rahman had discussed imposing a curfew to suppress the protesters. Al-Amin held former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Omaidul Quader, Salman F. Rahman, Anisul Huq, and other senior Awami League leadership, along with high-ranking police officials, directly responsible for the casualties incurred during the uprising.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has formally accepted the testimony as part of the ongoing investigation into crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the movement. Anisul Huq and Salman F. Rahman remain in custody as the legal proceedings continue.
