Clash Between Dhaka College Chhatra Dal and New Market Jubo Dal Leaves Twenty Injured

At least 20 people were injured following a violent clash between members of the Dhaka College unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and local Jubo Dal activists in the capital’s New Market area on Tuesday evening. The confrontation, which erupted over the control of street vending space in front of Balaka Cinema Hall, prompted a heavy police deployment to restore order.
According to New Market police, the dispute began around 7:30 p.m. when Dhaka College JCD members attempted to evict street vendors allegedly installed by supporters of KM Chanchal, the member secretary of the New Market unit of Jubo Dal. Initial verbal altercations escalated quickly, with police reports indicating that a group of 50 to 60 individuals, led by Chanchal, attacked the JCD members with sticks and machetes.
As news of the assault spread to the nearby campus, more than 100 Dhaka College students mobilized and marched to the political office of KM Chanchal, located in the Bashundhara Alley adjacent to Priyangon Market. The students vandalized the premises, leading to a secondary clash that left at least 15 to 20 people injured. The casualties are currently receiving medical treatment at various facilities, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Popular Medical College Hospital.
Hasan Farazi, deputy office secretary of the Dhaka College JCD unit, stated that he was unaware of the specific triggers for the conflict. He confirmed that several prominent student leaders, including Joint Convenors Prince Khandaker and Sumon Sikdar, as well as committee members Sagar Khan, Saymon Islam, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Jihadul Islam, were among those injured in the violence.
KM Chanchal has denied the allegations of inciting violence, claiming he was not present during the incident. He alleged that external agitators, masquerading as JCD members, assaulted vendors under his protection and carried out a raid on his office involving looting.
Mohsin Uddin, officer-in-charge of New Market Police Station, confirmed that the clash originated from a dispute over street vendor placements. He stated that the situation has since been brought under control and that police officers remain stationed at the scene to prevent further unrest.
