Attacks, looting and arson in Saltha due to conflict between the two sides

There have been incidents of attacks, vandalism and looting between the two sides over dominance and control of the area in Faridpur’s Saltha. On Monday morning, 20-25 houses were vandalized, looted and two houses were set on fire by attacking Mirer Gotti village of the upazila.
It has been found that there is a conflict between Zahid Matubbar of Ballia Gotti village and Nuru Matubbar, a resident of Arayakandi village and former UP member of Ward No. 1, over dominance and control of the area in Gotti Union. In the area they are known as Gramya Moral. Recently, these incidents of violence have occurred one after the other in Ballia Gotti Bazar, Arayakandi and Gotti areas of Gotti Union of the upazila. Several cases have been filed in these incidents.

Saltha Upazila Awami League President Delwar Hossain said that both Nuru and Zahid were once associated with Awami League politics. Nuru Saltha was the sports affairs secretary of Upazila Awami League. Although Zahid does not hold any position, he is the nephew of Gotti Union Awami League president Amir Matubbar. After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, both joined the BNP in a desperate bid to take control of the area. The two sides have clashed at least 10 times. Some have been paralyzed. More than two hundred houses were vandalized. Some houses were even set on fire. There are also allegations of looting.
Local residents said that because of a previous dispute, Zahid’s supporters beat and injured Anwar Sheikh (30), a supporter of Nuru Matubbar yesterday afternoon. Some time after receiving the news, supporters of Nuru Matubbar beat Zahid’s supporter Rezaul. Since then, tensions have flared between supporters of both sides.

Zahid’s supporters hacked and injured Nuru Matubbar’s son Rajib Matubbar (32) in Gotti area of Mir this morning between 8 am and 8:30 am. Later, supporters of Nuru Matubbar attacked the houses of Zahid’s supporters in Gotti and Nayakandi villages of Mir with indigenous weapons, vandalizing 20-25 homesteads and setting fire to two houses.
Nuru Matubbar said, “Zahid and Azad Matubbar’s supporters have maimed 10-12 of us by using PTKs and knives to dominate the area. Complaints are not accepted at the police station. The police work for them. Such a situation would not have happened if the police had taken a strong role. Even today, some people, including my son, were cut and seriously injured.
Zahid Matubbar said, “I have no supporters. I myself am sick now. Even so, I am not involved in any politics, religion, or hustle and bustle from now on. I want to leave everything and live with my family.
Bablur Rahman Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Saltha Police Station, said that between the two Matubbars, one after the other, there have been cases of assaults, vandalism and looting of the area. The police are playing an impartial and strict role to keep the situation normal after receiving the information. No sides are being taken here. Allegations of favoritism are not correct.
