16 sick in two schools due to loud sound of lightning in Mehendiganj, attendance reduced due to fear

Panic prevails among students across the upazila after 16 people, including teachers and students of two secondary schools, fell ill due to the loud sound of lightning in Barisal’s Mehendiganj. This has reduced the attendance of students in various educational institutions of the upazila today.

A teacher and 15 students fell ill due to the sound of sudden lightning in Dadpur Temuhani Secondary School of Charekkaria Union and Patabunia Secondary School of Alimabad Union while teaching on Tuesday afternoon. Eight of them were admitted to Mehendiganj Upazila Health Complex. Others received first aid.

The authorities of Dadpur Temuhani Secondary School said that the students started running in fear when there was a thunderous sound around 2:30 p.m. yesterday. At this time, apart from religious teacher Farukul Islam, seven students fell ill and fell on the ground. Some of them lose consciousness. They are Jannat Begum of seventh grade, Fatema Begum of eighth grade, Amena Begum, Sumaiya Begum, Meem Akhtar and Afroz Akhtar and Sumaiya Akhtar of ninth grade.

Eyewitness Sadia Akhtar said that the sky was overcast at noon. Suddenly there was a thunderous sound around the school. Some of them including teachers lost their knowledge. Later, other teachers of the school and local people quickly rescued them and took them to the Upazila Health Complex.

At the same time eight more students fell ill due to the loud sound of lightning in Patabuniya Secondary School of Alimabad Union, said Bahadur Mridha, parent member of the school. The head teacher of the school. Nizam Uddin Fakir said that the students fell down on the ground and fainted due to the loud sound of lightning. First aid was given to them locally.

Mehendiganj Upazila Health Complex’s emergency department doctor Abdul Quader said eight students from Dadpur school came to the hospital after falling ill due to the lightning incident. Upazila North Ulania Coronation Secondary School Principal Md. Helal Uddin said that there is some fear among the students in the incident of injuries due to the sound of lightning in two schools on Tuesday. Due to this today the school attendance was a little low. Apart from that, this happened due to heavy rain and stormy weather today. He said, “We have given various suggestions in the class to keep the morale of the students strong and given warning information about lightning.”

Mohendiganj Upazila Secondary Education Officer. Mohi Uddin said that since the incident, he has been regularly monitoring the treatment of sick students. The concerned schools have been asked to be alert.
