Dengue claims five more lives in Bangladesh as total infections surpass 28,000

Dengue fever continues to surge across the country, with health authorities reporting five additional deaths and 839 new hospitalizations in the 24-hour period ending Sunday morning. These latest figures bring the total death toll for the year to 82, while the cumulative number of hospital admissions has reached 28,929.
The data, released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), indicates that the Khulna division recorded the highest number of new admissions with 159 patients. Other significant case counts included 135 patients in areas outside the city corporations within the Dhaka division, 117 in Barisal, 100 in Chittagong, 91 in the Dhaka South City Corporation, 79 in Mymensingh, 71 in Rajshahi, 61 in the Dhaka North City Corporation, 23 in Rangpur, and three in Sylhet.
Of the total 28,929 individuals hospitalized this year, 26,896 have successfully recovered and been discharged. As of Sunday, there were 1,951 patients actively receiving treatment at various hospitals across the country.
Demographic analysis reveals a gender disparity in infection and mortality rates. While 61.9 percent of all recorded patients are male, women account for 59.3 percent of the 82 total deaths reported this year. Furthermore, the disease is disproportionately affecting younger adults; individuals aged between 21 and 30 years account for 8,187 of the total infections.
Urban areas remain the primary hotspots for the outbreak, with 20,972 cases reported within city corporation jurisdictions compared to 7,591 cases in outlying regions. Monthly trend analysis shows a sharp increase in transmission, with 13,619 cases identified so far in August, significantly surpassing the 9,206 cases reported throughout July.
