Shah Rukh Forgoes Fee After Film Fails

MUMBAI – Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan famously refused a significant portion of his 9.5 million rupee fee for the 2002 film “Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam” to spare producer K.C. Bokadia from financial distress, a story recently recounted by Bokadia himself. The gesture, made nearly two decades ago, highlighted Khan’s ethical stance after the star-studded romantic drama underperformed at the box office.

Bokadia revealed that despite the film’s financial struggles, he was prepared to honor Khan’s full payment. However, Khan unequivocally declined the remaining sum, stating that while he could easily earn the money elsewhere, accepting it would force the producer to sell his home – an outcome Khan wished to prevent.

The film, which also featured Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit, garnered considerable buzz before its release but ultimately failed to meet commercial expectations. Despite the disappointment, Bokadia was determined to pay his lead actors, prompting Khan’s widely praised act of generosity.

Bokadia recounted his repeated attempts to pay Khan, all of which the actor politely refused. The producer later investigated the reasons for the film’s lackluster performance but found no clear answers. Khan’s decision to forgo a substantial part of his salary created a lasting example of professional integrity within the industry.
