Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit warns public against unauthorized digital lending apps and online loan scams

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has issued a formal warning to the public regarding the proliferation of unauthorized mobile applications and digital platforms that lure unsuspecting individuals into predatory lending schemes. The regulatory body cautioned that these illegal entities frequently exploit borrowers through deceptive practices, including the collection of sensitive personal data.

This warning follows recent media reports, including an investigation by the daily Prothom Alo, which identified at least 30 mobile applications operating in Bangladesh that utilize aggressive and often illegal tactics to solicit customers via social media advertisements and the Google Play Store. Victims of these platforms have reported widespread harassment and intimidation following their engagement with these digital lenders.

According to the BFIU, these unauthorized operators often seize control of a user’s private data, including contact lists, personal photographs, and sensitive identification information. This data is subsequently weaponized to exert undue pressure on borrowers, with reports of blackmail, threats to leak private information, and the extortion of exorbitant interest and service fees.

The central bank emphasized that no entity is permitted to operate lending services via mobile apps or digital platforms without explicit authorization from Bangladesh Bank and compliance with prevailing financial regulations. Under the Money Laundering Prevention Act of 2012, conducting fraudulent lending activities constitutes a predicate offense to money laundering and is subject to severe legal penalties.

The BFIU has advised the public to exercise extreme caution by avoiding loans from unverified digital platforms, refusing to share personal identifiers or bank details with suspicious apps, and remaining vigilant against demands for upfront registration or processing fees. Citizens are also urged not to participate in, or facilitate, such illicit schemes, noting that participation in fraudulent financial activities is a punishable offense.

The authorities identified 31 specific unauthorized lending applications, including Sathi Loan, Popcash, Fincash, Quick Loan, Quick Taka, Dhaka Fin, Loanvibe, Dost Loan, Taka Cash Loan, Kwanza Loan, SSH Money, Loanbuddy, Cashhora, Alo Cash, Fast Loan, Easy Taka, Dhairyo Loan, Fin.do, Bongo Cash, Asha Loan, Subidha Loan, Smart Loan BD, Online Loan BD, City Online Loan, BD Sahoj Loan, Cash Loan, Sonali, Loanhut, and Takanow.

Victims of these predatory platforms or individuals possessing information regarding unauthorized lenders are encouraged to file formal complaints through the official BFIU website. The agency stated that it is actively monitoring these digital threats to protect the integrity of the financial sector and the security of the public.
