Police investigate suspected illegal horse meat trafficking ring in Jhenaigati

Police in Jhenaigati, Sherpur, have launched an investigation after three horses were slaughtered in an apparent illegal meat-trading operation. Authorities recovered physical evidence and samples of the horse meat early Friday morning after suspects fled the scene upon being discovered by local residents.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. at a site known as Fulhari, located behind a residence in the West Bhaluka area of Nalkura Union. According to local witnesses, a group of individuals has been suspected of operating an illicit horse-slaughtering ring in the vicinity for an extended period.
Residents reported observing several individuals butchering the animals around 12:30 a.m. Local community members claimed that, in addition to the three slaughtered horses, three other live horses were found tethered at the site. Upon realizing they had been detected, the suspects abandoned the carcasses and fled the area.
Allegations have been directed toward a group purportedly led by a local resident identified as Gutamiya, who neighbors claim was preparing the meat for distribution. When reached for comment by telephone, the contact number for the accused individual was found to be inactive.
Sub-Inspector Kanai Chandra Lal Chakrabarty of Jhenaigati Police Station confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving the report. He noted that while investigators successfully collected evidence and samples of the meat, the suspects had already escaped. The remaining meat was subsequently buried on-site.
Local law enforcement has briefed the Upazila Nirbahi Officer on the matter. Authorities are now working to identify the individuals involved in the operation to ensure appropriate legal action is taken.
