Bangladesh Women Council Reports Over 250 Cases of Violence Against Women and Girls in August

At least 252 women and girls were subjected to various forms of violence across Bangladesh in August, according to data released by the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad on Tuesday. The figures indicate an average of eight incidents of violence per day throughout the month.
The report, compiled by the organization’s central legal aid sub-committee, is based on incidents reported by 15 national daily newspapers and two online news portals. The statistics highlight a grim security situation for women and children, with 118 girls and 134 women identified as victims.
Homicides accounted for a significant portion of the violence, with 55 fatalities reported, including 10 girls and 45 women. The data further revealed that 54 individuals, comprising 36 girls and 18 women, were victims of rape. Among these cases, 13 victims—including eight girls—were subjected to gang rape, while two victims, including one girl, were murdered following sexual assault. Additionally, 14 attempted rape cases were documented, involving 11 girls.
Sexual violence, including harassment and stalking, affected 30 people, of whom 24 were girls. This category included 14 cases of sexual assault and nine cases of stalking. Furthermore, seven individuals, four of whom were girls, were subjected to cyber harassment.
The report also detailed a wide array of other crimes, including attempted murder, burn injuries, suicides, domestic worker abuse, family violence, child marriage, and kidnapping. The Bangladesh Mahila Parishad continues to advocate for stricter legal enforcement to address the persistent trend of violence against women and children in the country.
