Court Postpones Indictment Hearing for Tulip Rizwana Siddiq in Gulshan Property Fraud Case until January

A Dhaka court on Tuesday deferred the hearing on framing charges against British Member of Parliament Tulip Rizwana Siddiq and one other individual in a case involving alleged flat fraud in the capital’s Gulshan area. Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 rescheduled the hearing for January 11, 2025.
Mir Ahmed Ali Salam, a lawyer for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), confirmed the development. He stated that while the court had originally scheduled the hearing for Tuesday, proceedings against the co-accused, Sardar Mosharraf Hossain, remain stayed under a directive from the High Court. Consequently, the judge opted to reschedule the hearing for both defendants rather than proceeding solely against Tulip Siddiq.
Tulip Siddiq, a Labour Party lawmaker in the United Kingdom, is the daughter of Sheikh Rehana and the niece of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted following a mass uprising. The co-accused, Sardar Mosharraf Hossain, is a former assistant legal advisor for the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), the capital’s development authority.
The case originated on April 15 of last year, when the ACC filed charges alleging fraudulent activities related to an apartment owned by Eastern Housing Limited in Gulshan. Following an investigation, the court took cognizance of the charge sheet against the two defendants on February 18, simultaneously issuing arrest warrants. On April 8, the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Sabbir Foyez transferred the case to the Special Judge Court-5 for trial.
