Assistant Sub-Inspector Testifies in Crimes Against Humanity Case Involving Jashore Police Shooting

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md. Sirajul Islam testified before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Tuesday regarding a 2016 human rights violation case involving the shooting of two individuals in Jashore’s Chaugachha.

Islam, currently stationed at Satkhira’s Patkelghata Police Station, served at the Chaugachha Police Station from July 2016 to March 2017. During his testimony, he stated that on August 3, 2016, he and a team of police officers intercepted two members of Chhatra Shibir, identified as Israfil Hossain and Ruhul Amin, at a checkpoint in Narayanpur.

According to Islam’s account, the police team, which included Sub-Inspectors Mokhlesuzzaman and Akik, along with ASI Majed, stopped the pair on a motorcycle between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Upon inspecting their shopping bag, officers reportedly discovered receipt books and registration documents related to Chhatra Shibir’s fundraising activities. Islam testified that following the discovery, Sub-Inspector Mokhlesuzzaman contacted the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chaugachha Police Station, who subsequently ordered the suspects to be brought into custody.

Islam further testified that when he returned to the police station on the morning of August 5, 2016, he learned that the two detainees had been shot in the legs the previous day in the Bandulitola area of Chaugachha. He identified the officers responsible for the shootings as Constables Sajjad and Zahirul. The injuries sustained by the two men were severe enough to necessitate the amputation of their legs.

The case involves eight defendants, three of whom—Akikul Islam, Sajjadur Rahman, and Kazi Zahurul Haque—are currently in custody. All three are former police officers. The remaining five defendants, including former Jashore Superintendent of Police (SP) Anisur Rahman, remain at large.
