Masked gang loots jewelry and cash from Patiya union parishad member home after assaulting retired police officer

A gang of masked robbers raided the home of a Union Parishad member in Patiya, Chittagong, late Wednesday, stealing cash and gold jewelry while brutally assaulting a retired police officer.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. in Chakrashala village under the Kochuai Union. According to local authorities, a group of seven to eight masked individuals broke the locks of the residence belonging to Union Parishad member Prabir Bhattacharjee.
The homeowner and his family were absent at the time, as they were at a clinic in Chittagong city for the birth of Prabir’s daughter. The robbers confronted the victim’s uncle, 78-year-old Babul Bhattacharjee, a retired police sub-inspector who resides in an adjacent house. The assailants held Babul Bhattacharjee at gunpoint, dragged him into the primary residence, tied his hands and feet, and struck him with iron rods.
Prabir Bhattacharjee reported that the intruders breached his home and seized six bhoris of gold jewelry and approximately 750,000 taka in cash. The stolen funds included 400,000 taka recently withdrawn from a bank for a land purchase, along with other cash kept in the house.
Babul Bhattacharjee, who sustained swelling to his head and body from the attack, described seeing the armed group in his courtyard before being overpowered. The robbers released him after looting the residence.
Dr. Sama Binte Safiul of the Patiya Upazila Health Complex confirmed that Babul Bhattacharjee received emergency treatment for head injuries on Thursday morning and was discharged after receiving initial care.
Officer-in-Charge Ziaul Haque of Patiya Police Station stated that investigators visited the scene to collect evidence. While the police are currently categorizing the incident as a theft, a full investigation into the robbery and physical assault is underway.
