AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju Criticizes Government Performance Amid Rising Unemployment and Economic Instability

CHITTAGONG – AB Party Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju has criticized the interim government for failing to deliver on key governance benchmarks, alleging that six months into its tenure, the administration has failed to curb violence, stabilize law and order, address unemployment, or mitigate economic volatility.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled “Government Hesitation in Implementing the July Charter, Rising Commodity Prices, and Energy Crisis: Public Expectations,” held at the Chittagong Press Club’s S. Rahman Hall on Friday, Manju argued that a widening gap between the government’s rhetoric and its actions has exacerbated the unemployment crisis rather than resolving it.
Manju noted that while the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had previously pledged to create job opportunities for 10 million educated youths within its first 18 months in power, the current reality involves factory closures driven by protracted energy and power shortages. These operational disruptions have resulted in mass layoffs, further intensifying the nation’s unemployment burden.
The AB Party leader also challenged the government’s stance on the public referendum and the July Charter. He contended that contradictory statements from senior leaders regarding these initiatives have eroded public confidence. He warned that if the energy crisis persists, it will trigger further inflation and unemployment, creating a dangerous disparity between income and expenditure that could threaten the government’s popular mandate.
Manju cautioned that historical precedents suggest that as regimes lose popularity, they often drift toward authoritarianism and become intolerant of dissent. He indicated that such conditions could make a renewed mass movement inevitable to safeguard good governance and democratic principles.
Presiding over the event, AB Party Central Vice Chairman and Chittagong Metropolitan Convener Golam Faruk asserted that the government must not seek political compromises or utilize stalling tactics regarding the implementation of the July Charter. He warned that the public would not forgive the administration if it retreats from these core commitments.
The discussion, moderated by Chittagong Metropolitan Joint Member Secretary Zayed Hasan Chowdhury, featured addresses from Central Organizing Secretary Siddiqur Rahman, Metropolitan Member Secretary Syed Abul Kashem, and central leader Ataur Rahman Noor. Other notable attendees included AB Youth Party Member Secretary Md. Jabed Iqbal, and metropolitan leaders Asgar Hossain, Sanjay Chowdhury, Suman Chowdhury, Arshad Hossain, and Sohrab Hossain.
